Naval Museums of Athens

Greece is a country with a rich maritime life, that dates back to ancestry, thanks to its long coastline. The maritime history including marine tools and instruments, documents, ships even battle objects, is depicted in the Naval Museums of Greece.

What is more, a very interesting collection of animals and plants that live in the sea is exposed in the Moschakis International Museum of Maritime Research.

The Naval Museum of Greece

Founded in 1949, the Naval Museum of Greece is the largest museum related to the maritime life of the country. The museums houses a part of the Long Walls built by Themistocles around Piraeus port, in the 5th century BC. There is also a copy of the statue of Poseidon that was found in Artmissio cape and the original sculpture is housed in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens on the wall. The visitors have the chance to see models of the triremes that was used in the Battle of Salamina. There are also map with the ancient naval routes and the topography of ancient Athenian areas. The museums houses a room dedicated to the marine life of people during the byzantine years and a unique collection of ship models dating back to the 18th century. Some rooms of the museum host paintings with marine sceneries created by great artists while visitos have the opportunity to take a look at marine items such as uniforms, flags, medals and a lot of photographs.
